Flight Control Engineer

Full-time position

On-site

Mountain View, CA

This full-time position for a Flight Control Engineer is based in Mountain View, CA. You will be part of a cutting edge engineering team that is developing the ASKA™ A5, a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle. We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023.

This position will require you to do design, development, analysis and testing of flight control for the ASKA™ A5 drive and fly vehicle. You'll work in all areas of the system development cycle including detail design, integration, flight testing and certification efforts.

ON THE JOB:

  • Develop flight control and navigation algorithms including linear analysis and non-linear analysis, develop design and analysis tools, and conduct mathematical modeling

  • Develop mathematical modeling and six-DOF simulation of flight vehicle dynamics

  • Perform navigation and control system analysis and optimization, perform simulation development and validation

  • Execute flight data analysis, develop documentation of all facets of work performed, develop flight test plans, and provide flight test support

  • Troubleshoot navigation and flight control anomalies via flight data analysis, correlation with flight software operation and generating corrective actions

  • Deep knowledge of flight control and navigation sensor systems, and perform analysis in connection with these systems

  • Create and review Certification Plans, Qualification Test Procedures and Qualification Test Reports

  • Review qualification by similarity and/or analysis reports

  • Review system safety documents (PSSA, SFHA, AFHA, SSA and Particular Risk Analysis)

  • Create, review and approve ground test procedures, flight test procedures and their corresponding test reports.

FLIGHT TESTING:

  • Determine test specification definition

  • Discuss, write and review test plans and preparation activities with the engineering team

  • Prepare and review pre- and post-flight briefings

  • Monitor live flight data, typically via telemetry, during flight test on aircraft

  • Identify non-conformities, quality escapes, etc. to create rejection tags

  • Make assessments to ensure safety of flight determination

  • Write flight test results reports.

FLIGHT SCIENCES:

  • Expertise in area of stability & control and aircraft handling characteristics

  • Support, plan, execute and analyze Wind Tunnel Activities.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience as a Flight Control Engineer

  • Proficient in software such as C++, MATLAB, Python

  • Hands-on experience applying classical and modern control theory to an autonomous  system

  • Extensive knowledge of aircraft flight testing

  • High proficiency in aerodynamics, aircraft performance and flight controls

  • Proficiency in 3D cut software, Solidworks and Siemens NX

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Extensive experience with AI integration into Flight Control.

Test Pilot

Contract position

Mountain View, CA

We are looking for qualified candidates to join a team of test pilots (contractors). Our company will conduct research and development flights of a large unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to validate aircraft design concept, performance, stability, and control.

 

ASKA is headquartered in Mountain View, California, but the flight testing will take place at a private location in Northern California.

 

Join us! You will be part of a cutting-edge engineering team that developed the ASKA™ A5 roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle. The vehicle is a full-scale, functional prototype. The test flights are authorized with an Experimental R&D Certificate.

 

ASKA™ A5 is the first in the world drive and fly eVTOL with STOL capabilities. Our company signed a five-year Space Act Agreement with NASA to advance our participation in NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility National Campaign. We are also working with the FAA and we are getting close to G1.

Stress Analysis Engineer (Aviation)

This position for a Stress Analysis Engineer (Aviation) is based at our facility in Mountain View, CA and you will be responsible for optimization of the structural and mechanical design of a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle the ASKA™ A5. We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023.

 

This is a specialized role for an experienced aerospace stress analysis engineer with the following professional background and qualifications:

 

  • Your responsibilities will focus on composite stress analysis

  • You’ll use your expertise in dynamic and static stress analysis

  • Actively collaborate with an engineering team to improve the manufacturability of a product (Design for Manufacturing) while controlling cost and weight.

 

Required Work Experience

 

  • Dynamic and Static stress analysis experience

  • 10 years minimum of engineering experience in design, stress analysis and production environment with composite and metal structures in the aerospace industry

  • Proficient in Altair software

  • Experience with wing and fuselage stress analysis

  • Proficient in the fundamentals of industrial engineering.

Propulsion Control Engineer

This position for a Propulsion Control Engineer is based at our facility in Mountain View, CA and you will work with our engineering team on a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle called the ASKA™ A5. We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023.

 

The Propulsion Control Engineer will be working closely with multiple systems engineers, such as Propulsion, Flight Control, Energy Storage (BMS, engine generator ECUs) and Drive systems. A strong working knowledge of CAN communication and software interface is required. The position will focus on the development of Motor PIDs, controls, message structure and bus loading.

 

Responsibilities

  • Design of propulsion and automotive drive motor control, CAN communication with other systems

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Proficiency in motor control (torque control, speed control)

  • Experience in designing ARINC or CAN communication protocols among multiple party controllers

  • Experience in creating .dbc files and performing HIL, SIL simulation testing

  • Proficiency in vehicle diagnostics (

  • Proficiency in interface control, change control, and requirements control

 

Desired/optional qualifications

  • Experience in developments using ARINC825 or CANopen

Motor Control

Engineer

This full-time position for a Motor Control Engineer is based in Mountain View, CA. You will be part of a cutting edge engineering team that is developing a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle called the ASKA™ A5.  We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023. You'll be working closely with multiple systems engineers, such as Propulsion, Flight Control, Actuation and Drive systems.

 

The position will focus on motor controller development and tuning with a strong working knowledge of communication and software interfaces.

 

Responsibilities

  • Design of propulsion and automotive drive motor control, CAN communication with other systems

 

Minimum qualifications

Software Integration Engineer

This full-time position for a Software Integration Engineer is based in Mountain View, CA. You will be part of a cutting edge engineering team that is developing a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle called the ASKA™ A5. We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023. The Software Integration Engineer will be working closely with system engineers to develop the vehicle software and communication architecture between multiple controller units.  A strong working knowledge of CAN communication, software and firmware development is required. SPI and I2C is a plus. The position will focus on the development of PIDs, controls, message structure and bus loading.

 

Previous experience

  • Experience in aerospace or automotive software developments

  • Must have worked on development and testing of master - slave or master - multiple slave or multiple master - multiple slave system.

Responsibilities

  • Design of vehicle systems software architecture and CAN communication

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Proficiency in designing software architecture

Battery System Integration Engineer

This full-time position for a Battery System Integration Engineer is based in Los Altos, CA. You will be part of a cutting edge engineering team that is developing a roadable electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle called the ASKA™ A5. We debuted the full-scale, functional prototype of the ASKA™ A5 at CES Las Vegas January 5-8th, 2023. The Battery System Integration Engineer is responsible for the design, testing and integration of battery systems, bringing experience to build best in class high power eVTOL application system with supreme thermal management performance.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • highly experienced in battery systems, bringing expertise in cells, modules, high voltage busbars, switchgears, BMS and diagnostics

  • perform requirements definition for battery system based on eVTOL operational requirements and environmental conditions (especially in thermal, EMI, HIRF, shock and vibration)

  • integration with aircraft structure (work closely with Structure engineers)

  • electronics integration (work closely with Electrical system engineers)

  • management design, analysis and testing

  • trade off studies to further reduce weight and volume, continuous improvement in package efficiency.

 

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience relating to battery technology is required

  • Proficiency in CATIA and at least one battery system modeling/simulation suite

  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills in electrical, thermal, structural, and systems domains, including root cause determination and corrective action

  • Experience in electrical circuit simulation and analysis of high voltage hardware and electrical loads

  • Bachelor’s degree major in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering is preferred, Master’s degree with thesis related to battery technology is a plus.
